Edo Varsity Lecturer Dies in Hotel After Encounter With Sex Worker

News

Tragedy struck in Ekpoma, Edo State, after a senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, reportedly slumped and died in a hotel room shortly after an alleged sexual encounter with a 21-year-old commercial sex worker.

The incident occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.

According to the Edo State Police Command, Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel with the woman, identified as Angela Defa Jacob. He later reportedly sent her out to buy water.

But when she returned, she allegedly found the lecturer lying lifeless in the room.

Police spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, confirmed the incident on Tuesday, saying the command received a report at about 8pm on October 5.

Three people—the alleged sex worker, the hotel owner and the manager—have since been arrested as detectives probe the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death.

The police said Uwuigbe’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary, while investigation continues.

Meanwhile, the university distanced itself from the incident, stressing that it occurred outside the institution.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a staff member but described the circumstances as a matter concerning his private life.

“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life,” he said.

He also clarified that the woman involved was not a student of the university.

As police continue their investigation, the exact cause and circumstances of the lecturer’s sudden death remain unclear pending further findings.
